Untrodden ("the app", "we", "us", or "our") helps you discover uncrowded, overlooked places. This policy explains exactly what the app accesses, where that data goes, and the choices you have. We built Untrodden to need as little of your data as possible: there is no account, no login, no advertising, no analytics, and no tracking, and we never sell your data.
Plain-language summary
- Untrodden has no user accounts and collects no personal profile.
- To find places near you, the app sends coordinates and map search text to OpenStreetMap and Apple Maps. These are required to return results and are not stored by us.
- Your journal (saved places, visit stamps, notes, and photos) is stored on your device and, if you use iCloud, synced privately through your own iCloud account. It is never sent to us or to any other company.
- We run no servers of our own and keep no copy of your activity.
Untrodden does not ask you to create an account and does not collect your name, email, phone number, or any advertising identifier. The app accesses the following data only to provide its core features:
With your permission, the app uses your device's approximate location ("when in use") to center the map and find hidden places near you. You can decline this and still use the app by panning the map and tapping "Search this area." Your location is used on-device and, as described in Section 2, the resulting coordinates are sent to OpenStreetMap and Apple Maps to fetch nearby places. We do not store your location or build any location history.
When you search a destination or tap "Search this area," the app sends the text you type and/or the relevant map coordinates to Apple Maps (for autocomplete and geocoding) and to OpenStreetMap (to find places). This is required to return results.
When you bookmark a place, mark it visited, write a field note, or attach a photo, that content is stored on your device using Apple's on-device database (SwiftData). If iCloud is enabled on your device, this journal content is synced privately through your personal iCloud account (Apple CloudKit) so it is available across your own Apple devices. This includes any photo you attach.
This journal data is never transmitted to us and is never shared with any third party other than Apple acting on your behalf to sync your own iCloud data. Photos are selected through Apple's system photo picker; the app does not access your broader photo library.
To keep the app usable without a connection, your most recent search results are cached locally on your device. This cache stays on the device and is not uploaded anywhere.
Untrodden uses no advertising or analytics SDKs. It relies on two infrastructure providers strictly to deliver its features:
